The Annie Moses Band has teamed up with Grammy Award Winning Producer/Composer, Michael Omartian to produce a brand new album entitled Through the Looking Glass. Here are some of the band members’ thoughts on this powerful, thought provoking work:
ON THE MESSAGE:
Robin: “We really probed the depths for this one. I had a stash of some of the most hard-hitting lyrics I have ever written. Every time we recorded an album I would look them over and say to myself, Naaaaw. Folks probably couldn’t handle that”.
Michael, on the other hand, doesn’t shy away from difficult issues. The Lord gave us some wonderful music that enhances the spiritual depth of the text, without weighing too heavy.
Alex: Our family loves holding theological discussions about the nature of God. I am increasingly in awe of His reality. I hope I communicated some of that awe in the songs “Through the Looking Glass,” and “The Golden Ratio”.
Ben: We’re glad to see Alex stepping up to the plate as a writer. His lyrics are fresh and compelling. Mom is bustin’ her buttons.
ON THE MUSIC:
Annie: I hope folks will take out the insert, sit down and read along the first time they hear this one. Through the Looking Glass holds a high level of intensity. The string work in “Glory Giver,” and “Where Do We Go From Here” is fascinating. And “Rainy Day” is turning into everybody’s favorite.
Ben: We recorded, “Moffat Jig” on our very first album, Legacy. I was only thirteen years old and playing that cello solo was rigorous! I’m glad to get to revisit it now that I’m a little older.
Bill: After Robin composed the lyric for “Read Between the Lies” I couldn’t wait to set it to music. The first chorus I wrote was a big power ballad. We all just loved it. But, at the time, Annie was very young vocally, so we chose to rewrite the chorus in a quieter more intimate mood that wouldn’t strain a live performance.
Annie: When Michael came on board we played the original version for him. He loved it and was totally positive on my ability to deliver the vocal. The song is dedicated to one of Mom’s childhood friends who committed suicide, a pressing issue for our times.
ON THE PROCESS:
Alex: Being a young producer and engineer myself, I couldn’t wait to get into the studio to see Michael and his engineer, Terry, work. I really learned a lot, standing up close to that caliber of experience and skill.
Annie: “Through the Looking Glass has been the most satisfying creative experience of my life, thus far. Michael has an easy way of pulling the best out of an artist, and I felt that power. This work explores theological, relational, and sociological issues without trite answers, but with humor and passion. I know the Lord is pleased.”
